Real Dog Moms of Chicago are kicking off the summer of 2019 with a doggy field trip squad. This is perfect for those with low or sporadic availability or those want to do more directly with dogs, but cannot do things such as fostering. So we’ve found a fun way to get involved with one of our favorite local rescues.
Tuesday morning is when One Tail At A Time (OTAT) does a thorough power-wash of the kennels and yard so that the most ideal time for field trips. This squad has two options: 1.) 2 hour field trips or 2.) SLEEP OVER PARTY! This will occur the lat Tuesday of each month.
1.) Field Trip – Pickup time would be 8am and then we would need them back by the end of the shift which is 10am. Here are some ideas: the park, out for a treat at a pet store or some ice cream, hangout and watch a movie cuddled up on the couch, a walk on the 606 or the lakefront path, a hike in a forest preserve.
2.) Sleep Over Parties – Pick up anytime between 6:30-8:15pm (when the Adoption Center closes). If you have one, take your resident dog and the OTAT dog on a walk to introduce each other. Take the intro slow! Once they are relaxed and used to each other, allow some play time inside or in a fenced in yard. Again, no off leash play or dog parks! and return by 10am the next morning. Please account for traffic and do not be late as volunteers leave at 10am. Should you not be able to return the dog by 10am due to work, we could also schedule that you drop off at 8am and set them up for a a field trip outing.
For either option you choose the dog, must have all of the proper OTAT gear – a martingale collar with a blue OTAT ID tag, easy walk harness if needed, and a sturdy leash. Be sure to take some poop bags and a bag of treats or food food for the overnight, with you.
If you want to bring your own dog with, please ask for approval. This is meant to spoil these dogs though, so the idea is for solo time for them with someone, outside the adoption center. Show them the sweet life.
Take lots of photos and videos! The more the better. Videos of playtime, snuggles, getting treats, leash walking, etc. are all great ways we can spruce up the dog’s Petfinders!
***IMPORTANT: Dogs must always be on leash! Absolutely NO dog parks or dog beaches. It is too dangerous.
We are kicking off with the last Tuesday of each month, and could increase should we get enough sign ups! There are 10 kennels at the OTAT Adoption Center, but they aren’t always filled up, so it would change month-to-month!
Email us to join this squad. One Tail will updated us on Sundays for how many field trips are needed so we will email you Monday morning to find the moms interested for that week. We will send you the informational PDF from OTAT and as well you’ll have a waiver to sign.
